Let me explain my ratings: The service isn't at your beck and call, kind of -- how do I say this? -- surly in a nice sort of way, but they'll get it to you. (Classic NY, in other words.) The value is good, not stupendous. But the reason for my high rankings on atmosphere is simply that that's the way I felt. As an out-of-towner who looks for at least one New York Experience every time I come up, and preferably more than one, I think I can safely say that Frankie and Johnny's qualifies. (My brother and sister-in-law, both New Yorkers, agree.) It's a classic red-lit showbiz dining experience. The sides are OK. My filet -- and their porterhouse, which could've fed the 10th Infantry -- came out beautifully. They have a serviceable list of wines by the glass, always a good thing -- although not critical here because it's definitely a red wine kind of place, conducive to agreement on a bottle. But the atmosphere -- a bit rough around the edges but perfect where it counts -- is why I'd come back. Frankie and Johnny is a sweetheart.
